Role of Neutrophils and Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Dengue Virus Pathogenesis
Dorca is a student at Ponce Health Sciences University and is currently conducting research focused on one of Puerto Rico’s most significant public health threats: dengue. Her work seeks to understand why some individuals—particularly those with a prior infection—develop more severe forms of the disease. This project holds great potential to improve early detection and patient management, reduce complications and hospitalizations, and contribute to the development of new prevention strategies, treatments, and preparedness measures for future dengue outbreaks in Puerto Rico and other tropical regions.

Modulation of the Tumor Microenvironment Immunology by Glioblastoma-Derived Exosomes: Effects on Microglial Polarization
Aleandra is a student at the Medical Sciences Campus and is currently conducting research focused on glioblastoma (GBM), one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain cancers in adults. Motivated by the impact this disease has on patients and their families in Puerto Rico, she seeks to better understand the relationship between brain cells known as microglia and tumor cells. This work has the potential to contribute to the development of new therapeutic alternatives that improve patients’ quality of life, reduce the adverse effects of current treatments, and offer greater hope to Puerto Rican families facing this disease.

Cognitive and Emotional Functioning in Puerto Rican Adults with Chronic Pelvic Pain and Other Chronic Pain Conditions
Andrea is a student at Ponce Health Sciences University currently conducting research on chronic pelvic pain and other chronic pain conditions within the Puerto Rican population—a topic that has received a minimal study at the local level. Her project aims to analyze how persistent pain affects cognitive functioning and emotional regulation, while also considering cultural factors and potential differences based on gender and pain type. Her work addresses a significant research gap, as Puerto Ricans have historically been underrepresented in studies regarding pain and mental health. The findings could contribute to the development of early detection tools and more personalized, culturally relevant treatments, helping to improve clinical care and the quality of life for those living with chronic pain in Puerto Rico.

Cyclodextrin-Cannabidiol Complexes: A Strategy for Enhanced Drug Delivery in Neurodegenerative Conditions
Alexdiel is a student at the Medical Sciences Campus and is currently conducting research focused on Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a condition that represents a growing public health concern in Puerto Rico due to the rapid aging of the population.
His project aims to explore an innovative therapeutic alternative using cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound that has shown potential to reduce inflammation, beta-amyloid accumulation, and other processes associated with the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
One of the main challenges of CBD is its low solubility and limited ability to reach the brain. To address this, the student proposes using cyclodextrins, molecules that can improve CBD’s solubility and facilitate its delivery to the brain.
This research is particularly innovative, as it seeks to evaluate, for the first time, the potential of this combination for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Molecular, Pharmacological and Circuit-Based Mechanisms of LF-DBS for the Extinction of Opioids
Fabiola is a student at the Medical Sciences Campus currently conducting research on opioid use disorder—a particularly significant public health issue in Puerto Rico, where overdose deaths continue to rise and access to advanced treatments is limited. Her project aims to understand the neural mechanisms associated with relapse and to explore new alternatives for achieving more lasting recovery. Her findings could contribute to the development of personalized treatments and non-invasive neuromodulation alternatives, thereby benefiting oncology patients who use opioids for pain management and face a higher risk of dependence and relapse.
