Health Research Scholarship
She was a recipient of the Health Research Scholarship in 2023 and is currently a student at Ponce Health Sciences University. Fabiana is working on the project A Neutrophil-Centered Assessment on Inflammation in Obstructive Sleep Apnea, which focuses on “exploring the connection between obstructive sleep apnea and the inflammatory response generated by neutrophils, key cells of the immune system.” The main purpose of this project is to “elucidate the role of these cells in apnea and determine how their activity is related to the severity of the disease.” Fabiana and her project colleagues “aspire to discover innovative methods to monitor the disease and propose therapies that mitigate complications linked to obstructive sleep apnea, especially in the patient population in Puerto Rico.”
Health Research Scholarship
He was a recipient of the Health Research Scholarship in 2023 and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in public health, with a focus on the epidemiology field. Erik works on the project Social determinants of mental health among medical students in Puerto Rico: A mixed-methods study. This project “focuses on a cross-sectional study that adopts a mixed methods approach, integrating both quantitative and qualitative components supported by evidence. The methodology has been designed to obtain a holistic understanding of the relationship between the social determinants of health and the mental health symptoms that medical students in Puerto Rico currently face.” This research is expected to offer “significant contributions that influence the development of public health interventions aimed at improving the mental health and well-being of future health professionals on the island.”
Conference Scholarship
She is a 2025 Conferences Scholarship recipient and is currently in her second year of medical school at the Universidad Central del Caribe. In the month of February, Andrea had the opportunity to present her research titled Single vs. Dual-Plate Humeral Rotational Osteotomy in Patients with Congenital Arthrogryposis Multiplex. The project was presented at the 2025 Annual State of the Science Meeting – Special Emphasis on Muscle and Bone Health in Chicago. Her commitment to research and the health of disadvantaged communities has been strengthened through her work on various projects. One of these initiatives is this study on a genetic condition present in Puerto Rico but with less research in the medical literature. Andrea shares, “The conference scholarship allows me to cover these expenses and ensure that I can take advantage of this invaluable opportunity without financial limitations being an obstacle”.
Conference Scholarship
She is a 2025 Conference Scholarship recipient and is currently in her second year of medical school at Ponce Health Sciences University. During the month of March, Paulette had the opportunity to present her research titled The Impact of Socio-Demographic Factors, Financial Burden, and Social Support on Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression in Puerto Rican Women with Breast Cancer. The project was presented at the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS) conference in Pennsylvania. Opportunities like these allow the student to gain experience and connections that will help her achieve other goals along the way, expanding her professional field. Paulette shares: “I aspire to be a physician and contribute to increasing knowledge about the pathogenesis, prevalence, and burden of disease in the Puerto Rican population. My research knowledge will allow me to appropriately interpret findings and use them to improve the care I provide to my patients.”
Conference Scholarship
She is a 2025 Conference Scholarship recipient and will conclude her second year at the Universidad Central del Caribe during the month of May. In April, Patricia had the opportunity to present her research titled ADHD, Cerebellar White Matter Tracts and Cognition in Youth with Neurofibromatosis Type 1. Her project was presented at the 2025 American Academy of Neurology Annual Conference in San Diego, California. This conference represents a crucial opportunity for the student to deepen her interests in neurology, neurosurgery, and pediatrics, learning innovative techniques in scientific discovery and medical education. Patricia tells us, “As a second-year medical student pursuing a residency in pediatric neurology, I am honored that this research was accepted for presentation at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Conference—my first time presenting at such a renowned, large-scale gathering of experts in the field. This experience will allow me to not only share my findings with a specialized audience, but also interact with leading practitioners, researchers, and mentors who are shaping the future of neurology”.
Scientific Research Scholarship
He is a recipient of the Scientific Research Scholarship this year, 2025, and is about to complete his 4th year of medical school at the Medical Sciences Campus. Along with his principal investigator, Dr. Miguel Mayol Del Valle, Carlos is working on a project titled Two Decades of Data: The First Population-Based Study of Primary CNS Tumors in Puerto Rico. This project significantly enriches the student’s medical career by allowing him to participate in neurosurgical research with direct implications for patient care. The student also gains invaluable experience in clinical research methodology, data analysis, and the practical application of findings to improve patient outcomes in Puerto Rico. Carlos shares, “…I hope this initiative will spur a broader movement, creating a multiplier effect and inspiring other medical students and professionals to actively participate in local clinical research. Ultimately, my goal is to cultivate a strong research culture focused on addressing health disparities and improving medical practices tailored directly to the unique needs of our community”.
Scientific Research Scholarship
She is a recipient of the Scientific Research Scholarship this year, 2025, and is about to complete her 2nd year at the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine. Together with her principal investigator, Dr. Yaritza Inostroza Nieves, the student is working on a project titled “In Vitro Effects of Endometriosis-Associated Inflammatory Factors on Neuronal Excitability and Morphology.” Deyaneira shares, “From a personal perspective, this project represents an important opportunity for my training as a future physician and scientist. It allows me to develop skills in cell biology, neuroscience, and electrophysiology, fundamental tools for translational research in neurological diseases. It helps me strengthen my ability to design experimental models that integrate different physiological systems, which is essential for understanding complex diseases such as endometriosis and epilepsy. From a clinical level, the findings of this study could open up new therapeutic possibilities by combining neuropharmacological and hormonal treatments. If we can understand how endometriosis impacts brain function, we could identify drugs that reduce neuronal hyperexcitability and provide a more precise and effective approach for patients with neurological symptoms associated with this disease.”
