Our mission is to foster the development of individuals committed to science and research for the physical and mental health of Puerto Ricans. For the past 8 years we have helped more than 130 medicine students, researchers, undergraduate and pre-college students in their professional growth through our scholarship program and other donations.
Medicine Scholarship
She is a recipient of the MD-Comunidad Scholarship this year and is currently in her 2nd year of medicine at Ponce Health Sciences University. Paola has participated in several initiatives, including the community groups Enlace and Centros Sor Isolina, where students of medicine, public health, nursing and psychology have also joined together to establish the first student-run clinics for the community (Student-Run Free Medical Clinics). She was also the representative of the university’s Social Medicine Interest Group during her first year. In this initiative, she had the opportunity to donate food and necessities to homeless people in Ponce. Being part of these community groups, such as student-run clinics, has confirmed her desire to continue creating opportunities for both the community and the students. One of her professional goals is to be a professor at a school of medicine or public health. Serving different communities has allowed her to develop leadership skills, apply technical skills and continue working on social relationships and communication that will help her for the future. With the university’s support and organizations like our Foundation, the clinics will continue to serve communities in need and allow these initial efforts to be sustainable. As a future physician, Paola is committed to continuously integrate public health with medicine to battle health disparities and social injustice in Puerto Rico.
Medicine Scholarship
He is a recipient of the MD-Comunidad Scholarship this year and is currently in his 3rd year of medicine at Ponce Health Sciences University. Bryan, together with his partner Eric Graulau, have founded the Clínica del Sur-Student Run Free Clinics, in which they seek to provide continuity in medical service to low-income patients. On the other hand, they provide volunteer opportunities to medical students within this initiative. With the group, known as Enlace, they organized a health fair where they were able to bring donations and assist over 100 people in medical and psychological evaluations. Working as a volunteer has allowed him to create that bond with patients early in his training as a doctor, acquiring the ability to communicate with patients in a professional manner, but treating them as a close family member, so that they feel the confidence to express themselves openly. Also, it has allowed him to grow both professionally and personally. The gratification he feels from caring for patients confirms to him that he is in the right career. For Bryan, these are experiences that every medical student should have, and it is of great importance to him to train a future generation of doctors who are empathetic to patients, especially those in disadvantaged situations.
Conference Scholarship
She is a recipient of the Conference Scholarship this year and is currently in her 4th year of medicine at Ponce Health Sciences University. Recently, Laura had the opportunity to present her research topic “Tripledemic” Impact in a Tertiary Hospital in the South of Puerto Rico at the Pediatric Medical Student Research Forum conference. Having participated in this event was fundamental for her future as a pediatrician. From the research skills to the invaluable communication and networking skills she gained, every facet of this experience was a stepping stone in her medical training. The Conference Scholarship helped Laura gain more learning opportunities at this event. She commits to use each of these learning tools to become a more skilled and empathetic physician in pediatric care.
Conference Scholarship
They are recipients of the Conference Scholarship this year and are pursuing their medical degree at Ponce Health Sciences University. During the month of July, Gabriel and Joshua presented their research project Identification and Management of Pyoderma Gangrenosum after Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion at the 2023 Skin Inflammation in Human Health and Disease Conference at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. This opportunity significantly complemented both of their medical educations. One of the main goals that the students had in this event was to show the potential and impact of scientific work originating in Puerto Rico, in an institution of great worldwide renown. Another goal was to highlight the dedication and experience of our Island’s researchers and demonstrate their contribution to the medical community. Gabriel and Joshua’s attendance at this conference is a vital step in becoming compassionate and knowledgeable physicians dedicated to provide the highest level of care to future patients.
